Elegant Holiday Tablecloths and Candles with a Stencil and Glitter

By Victoria Larsen With the holidays upon us, its time to get our homes in shape for the guests and festivities! How about stenciling a new tablecloth and napkins to brighten your dining table? Its easy! Simply pre-wash your blank table cloth, and dont add fabric softener (which seals out the paint!). Inexpensive tablecloths are available at most retail outlets and even the dollar store. I love stencil cream paints for fabric since you cant feel the paint after it dries and it remains soft to the touch. However, craft acrylics can also be used. Choose deep red, green or even a black tablecloth, then stencil your chosen design in gold. Talk about elegant! Stencil your chosen design right in the center. Now, add it to the corners as well. If your design does not lend itself well to corner applications, simply apply a portion of the stencil to the corners (such as a group of leaves or a central element of the design).Allow the stenciling to dry, then to heat set by simply throwing it in a hot dryer for 25 minutes. Heat setting can also be done by applying a pressing cloth over the design and using the hottest iron setting that type of fabric can stand, iron for 1-2 minutes over the design to set it. This will prevent it from washing out when laundered. Now add candles to match and yes, stencil those too! We have a fabulous idea for sparkling candles that are fun and festive! To create a matching candle, simply choose a small element from the stencil and use masking tape to tape off openings around that element to prevent them from also being stenciled. Tape the stencil to the candle and with your stencil brush, apply white glue over the stencil design directly on to the candle. Remove the stencil and wash immediately so the glue does not dry on the stencil.Hold the candle over a garbage pail and sprinkle the glue design with gold, silver or iridescent glitter. Shake off the excess and allow to dry.Any candle can be done with this easy technique and can further be embellished with flat backed jewels from the craft store. Create ornate Christmas tree ornaments the same way then give away as a special gift to a friend. Dont forget that stunning Christmas cards can be created using this same technique. Raised plaster stenciled pine tree branches and plaster pine cones from a mold are the perfect solution for that wood box that sits next to your fireplace or the shoe bin outside the front door. Simply plaster stencils the branches with joint compound, cast your pine cones from the mold and adhere with joint compound to the branch design, allow to dry, then using a mixture of wall glaze and paint, create a color wash over the entire surface. Use the same design to create a wonderful holiday welcome sign for the front door. Stencil the design in to a square on any flat piece of wood, cast and place pine cones in the corners, paint with wall paint to seal and then stencil or hand paint the word Welcome in the center. If you like, the branches and pine cones can be painted in browns and greens for added color. Its very pretty to add streaks of gold to your brown pine cones for added flair. Holiday ornaments from any small molds are super easy to create! Simply take the mold of your choice and cast two of them. After they have been removed, apply joint compound to the back of each one (a very thin layer). Add a looped ribbon to the back of one of the plaster pieces to create a hanger, then press the two together to create one complete unit. Wipe any excess joint compound away and use to fill in openings between the two pieces. Allow to dry completely then paint as desired. Autumn Lawn Care Tasks with Tips

By James Kilkelly Summer officially gives way to autumn on the 22nd of September, which is known as the autumnal equinox, but for the lawn owner autumn begins much earlier. This is because the green keeping tasks for autumn begin from the 1st day of September. Your first task is to make changes to your mowing method, I would suggest raising the height of cut by 1cm above your summer mowing height which will give you an ultimate mowing height of 3cm (1 inches). The reason why you raise the cut to this height in autumn is to allow for the slowing of grass growth, on top of this I would usually mow just once a week once this growth begins to slow. Should your lawns suffer from slow growth in the spring or during dry spells in the summer you may consider applying an autumn lawn feed to develop strong roots and hardiness. If you feel your lawn is not all it should be and would benefit from this autumn pampering then by all means apply the fertiliser but ensure it is specially formulated for autumn application, an autumn lawn feed such as this contains phosphates and potash whilst omitting nitrogen which would cause unwanted growth. Many gardens may have goalmouths and beaten paths to washing lines that are tread-bare, sparsely populated by grass or compacted. Address these now to have them ship-shape for next season, start by driving the prongs of a garden fork approx 15cm (6 inches) into the compacted turf at various points throughout the affected area. This is a form of aeration, which allows more air to reach the grass plants roots on compacted soils. To thicken up your grass sward in these high traffic areas we must introduce fresh seed, so firstly we must create a seedbed. Add a light layer of clean loamy topsoil (This is available bagged in most garden centres), rake this with a flat garden rake to the consistency of large cake crumbs and follow this by shaking on some lawn seed at a rate of 40 to 50g per square metre. Tamp down lightly with the flat of the rake to ensure firm seed-soil contact, alternatively on large areas use a light garden roller. Try to avoid mowing the reseeded area until next season, as most lawnmowers tend to unsettle the new seed due to their vacuum action.As well as being a good month for reseeding bare areas, September is also a good time to sow new lawn from seed, with many being sown over the early autumn weeks. These diets make foods like pasta and rice out to be the root of all evil, instead encouraging you to eat high-fat, high-protein foods like meat and dairy products. While this approach does result in weight loss for many people, its long-term health effects are, at best, unknown, with most nutritionists agreeing that such a diet would most probably be harmful if it was kept to for a long time. In the end, the reason that people go so far to find ways of losing weight is that the one method that works is so difficult. You simply have to eat less food, and find time to exercise. Unfortunately for us, our bodies are addicted to food, and will do everything they can to manipulate us into eating more, not less its like trying to give up smoking, only theres no such thing as a food patch. Partial Collars Make Interesting Additions

How Many Calories Can I Have And Still Lose Weight?

By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP To figure out how many calories you should have, first start with where you are. In other words, figure out how many calories it takes to maintain your present size and then reduce from there. You can go about this in many ways. Most people simply choose an arbitrary number like 1200 calories and that’s what they eat, but in nearly every case that’s not nearly enough calories to ensure adequate nutrition, not to mention the deprivation that sets up. While losing weight and to this day, I eat over 2000 calories a day on average and I’ve maintained a good weight for my height for over 17 years. Remember, your body requires calories to maintain itself. Basic Calorie Requirements Calculation Based on Activity Level: Sedentary : 13 X Weight = Avg. cal/day Sedentary is not exercising at all Moderately Active: 16 X Weight = Avg. cal/day Moderately Active is exercising approximately 3-4 times per week Very Active: 19 X Weight = Avg. cal/day Very Active is 5-7 strenuous exercise sessions per week. If you weigh over 200 pound now, and you’d like to weigh closer to 150, here is a calculation you could use to get started: Assuming you are going to be adding enough exercise to quality as Moderately Active, we’ll use 16 as our modifier: 150 pounds X 16 calories per pound = 2400 calories Less 500 (Using the common 500 calories per day reduction) gives us a total of 1900 average calories per day If you started to incorporate a plan that allowed an average of 1900 calories every day, you’d start to lose weight. The mistake most people make is to reduce calories too much, which ultimately sacrifices muscle plus sets you up for feeling deprived. It’s far better in the long run to go more slowly, keeping as much muscle as possible while burning calories via exercise. Remember too, even if you don’t eat quite that many calories on many days, you might eat more on the weekends for instance, so it ends up being closer to your goal of 1900 average per day. Take the total calories for the week divided by seven. Remember, this average calorie number gives you plenty of wiggle room during the week. You can have some treats along with everyone else, or add more on weekends. Instead of constantly saying, “I can’t, I’m on a diet,” now you can say, “Thank you, that looks delicious,” and enjoy some. It doesn’t ruin your diet plan because you’ve got a large enough calorie allowance that if you are more careful some days than others, it will work out to the average number of calories you want. I tend to eat far less calories during the week than on weekends and my totals generally average out to 2000 to 2200 calories per day. The 500 calorie reduction is a well accepted amount. You can reduce your calories further, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It doesn’t benefit anyone to try for faster weight loss, in fact, if you reduce your calories too much you end up wasting muscle in the process, which is exactly what you do not want to do. If you want faster results, it’s better to add more activity, thereby burning more calories at rest. You may be thinking I’m nuts, recommending 1900 calories per day, but I can say for a fact that if you eat too little (1000 - 1200 calories is too few, IMO) then you set yourself up for all of the following: Deprivation. You’re going to feel deprived, mentally and physically. 1000 calories isn’t enough for your basic metabolic needs, much less to fuel yourself for your activity needs. Add more food! Just have a bit more than you’re already having, so for instance, if you are allowed 1/2 cup of vegetables is a whole cup going to ruin all your progress? I doubt it. Eat a whole cup, or go ahead and have two oranges. Fruits and vegetables are very low calorie but provide high nutrition. Sure, some vegis and fruits are high in sugar, but it’s natural sugar. I seriously doubt our planet grows any killer foods - it is more likely the food industry which has processed those foods to become nothing more than a dried powder, then add back more sugars, and chemicals so it will resemble the original product, is more harmful than a simple apple or banana? If you are diabetic or must watch the sugars, have a small bit of protein along with the higher glycemic food, such as an ounce of cheese with your apple. Notice I said an ounce of cheese, not a slab big enough to feed a small country. Metabolic Slow-Down Feeding yourself too few calories sets you up for metabolic slow-down. Studies have shown time and again that a heavier person can find it difficult to lose weight, even though eating very low calories, simply because their body’s metabolism is burning at such a slow rate. As you probably already know exercise helps to speed up your metabolism but so does eating. That’s why they say breakfast is so important, not only to fuel yourself but because it starts the metabolic furnace burning, and it continues to burn all day. If you don’t eat anything until noon, you don’t stoke your furnace to start burning until then either. Has the ultra low calorie approach worked for you so far? If not, why not try something more reasonable? Tag along with a friend who doesn’t have a weight problem and you’ll see how sometimes they eat more, sometimes less, but on average they eat enough to fuel their body and maintain their weight. Adding more food gives you additional eye appeal. If you split up 1000 calories over the course of an entire day you’re looking at pretty skimpy portions on your plate each time you eat. I like to feel like I’m getting enough to eat and I do this by rounding out my plate with extra vegetables. If I’m having a frozen entree for instance, I’ll cook up a cup or more of frozen vegetables to add to my plate. The extra vegis really fill me up, providing the satisfaction I need, and I often have a bit extra vegetables to throw away. Is that wasting food? No, it’s smart. Far better for me mentally to have extra food to toss away than to be licking the plate because I’m still hungry. I’m also not likely to start wanting something else to eat right after dinner if I’m feeling content with the amount I’ve eaten. Make an effort to learn to like your food as is. Plain mixed vegetables with nothing on them are delicious. It took me awhile to stop putting butter on them, and then even quitting the Molly McButter (just chemicals and sodium). I eat them plain and yes, they are great. Nature made our fruits and vegetables naturally sweet and all those “extras” we are used to using like butter on vegetables or potatoes certainly make things taste all yummy but they also make us larger than we need to be. Those “extra” calories add up. Slowly Make Adjustments to What or How Much You Eat Wean yourself off adding sugar to your cold cereal. Read the label; all processed cereals contain a ridiculous amount of added sugar. There’s no need to add more. My only exception is brown sugar on oatmeal. I don’t sugar my cereal at all anymore but it took me awhile to make the change. Start by adding a bit less, then next week cut back a bit more until you break the habit entirely. Tiny changes make up for big results over time. Four Ways to Increase Your Metaboism

Eating A healthy and natural way to increase your metabolism is by eating a lean protein, a complex carbohydrate, and a healthy fat approximately every 3 hours. The constant break-down of food will lead to an increased calorie burn throughout the day, causing your body to be a blazing furnace, burning a lot of calories. It may take a few weeks to notice a difference, but when you begin eating every three hours, your body will get used to it and you will feel starved if you go 4 hours or more without any food. Seriously. This is because your body’s physical and chemical processes have increased (increased metabolism). Take-home point: Eat every three hours to increase your metabolism. 2. Resistance Training Resistance training, whether it be with weights or gravity, will lead to more developed muscles. Muscle fibers do not just sit around and lay there like fat cells. Muscle fibers take calories to exist, for repair, for use, and even for breakdown. The more muscle you have, the greater the calorie demand is. On average, every pound of muscle you have burns approx. 50 calories per day. This means simply by increasing your muscle mass by 1 pound, you can essentially burn an additional 350 calories per week, or 18,200 calories per year (about 5 pounds of fat). But remember, this is not pure fat loss because if you starve yourself the calories, your muscles are usually the first to get eaten up, not fat stores. Take-home point: Increase your muscle mass to increase your metabolism. 3. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) It is well documented that exercising in the high level of output zone (85-95% of your maximum heart rate) increases the rate of your Excess Post Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). This simply means when you perform high intensity interval sprints (10-60 seconds) interrupted with rest intervals, your heart rate has the ability to stay elevated for up to 24 hours or until you fall asleep. How can you use this to your advantage? As early in the day as possible, perform a 15-30 minute HIIT exercise in order to increase the sum of your physical and chemical processes (metabolism). Warning: The following is an ADVANCED workout. Please consult your physician prior to performing any high intensity exercise. Example Treadmill HIIT Exercise Warm up: 3 minutes flat slow jog (i.e. 5 mph)Climb: 1 minute 3% incline, same speedClimb: 1 minute 6% incline, same speedClimb: 1 minute 9% incline, same speedClimb: 1 minute 12% incline, same speedWork 1: 1 minute 15% incline, same speedRest: 2 minutes flat, walking (i.e. 2.5 mph)Work 2: 1 minute 15% incline, slow jog (i.e. 5 mph)Rest: 1 minutes flat, walking (i.e. 2.5 mph)Work + Rest (repeat for a total of 5-8 work intervals). You can change the work intervals to accomodate your level. By Ken Katz What do you do when a long term relationship goes bad? How do you pick up the pieces and get on with your life? It is very simple for someone to tell you that you should just forget about the person you once loved and find someone new. You don’t want to stop rehashing in your mind the how and why the relationship went bad. What might you have done to fix it. What did you do wrong to ruin the relationship? Why couldn’t you just change and make it better. Guess what. It probably wasn’t really your fault and it probably wasn’t really your partners fault. It just happened. You just grew in different directions. Don’t cry too much over it. Pick up the pieces and start fresh. It might even be a blessing in disguise. Because, your next relationship might be the relationship to end all relationships. So, now hopefully you have something to look forward to. People grow apart no matter how much they think they are compatible with each other. As time goes by your beliefs and interests change. If you are not in tune with your partner you both start to grow in different directions. As sad as it seems, this is really a healthy thing. If people stop growing and learning then they stop living. And, if you are not living then you are dead. And, that is definitely not a fun thing. You can try to solve your differences. With discussion you might be able to convey what each of you are feeling and what your current needs are. If you and your partner think the relationship is worth saving, then maybe you each can make concessions and again find the common ground you both once had. If you two can’t, then stop beating each other. Just decide to end the relationship and try to leave as friends. You both will be much happier in the end. It will take time to heal the wounds. Take some time off. Try to clear your head. Don’t ponder over what is done. And, definitely don’t replay the relationship over and over again in your head. You will just be torturing yourself needlessly. And, don’t sulk too long. Pick yourself up and dust yourself off as soon as you can. Start meeting people again. Force yourself a little if you have to. This is the only way to start the healing process. Being happy with a smile on your face will help you get through life a lot easier. You will be able to do your job a lot better when you are happy. And, your friends will like you better even you are smiling and not sulking or crying.
