Is Your Workplace a Hazard for Your Diet?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Janice Elizabeth Small It can be easy to overeat at work. Your colleagues bring in treats every day because it’s always someone’s birthday or leaving party. There’s a culture that people eat muffins or doughnuts every Friday or even every day. The staff restaurant is full of fried food or mayonnaise laden salads and the nearest place outside work serves nothing but fast food. Here are 8 tips to immunise yourself against unwanted workplace calories. 1. Bring your own healthy lunch and snacks You know it makes sense. If you have something healthy and delicious to eat you’ll be less tempted by all the other unhealthy stuff around. It takes a bit of planning when you do your weekly shop but you’ll reap the rewards. Choose food which is easy to prepare and get as much as you can ready the night before to avoid last-minute panics in the morning. 2. Say “No” nicely You can get a lot of pressure from others to sample the snacks they bring in so this one may take some practise but it does get easier after a while. Just say “No thanks not just now” or “No thanks, I’m just about to have an apple” or “No thanks I’ve just eaten” or simply “No thanks” - no need to explain or apologise. Saying you’re on a diet seems to make some people try and persuade you more forcefully. (”One won’t hurt”, “Surely you don’t need to lose any more weight you’ll fade away” etc). Before you know it you’re giving in. If you really can’t stand the pressure say “Thanks I’ll save it for later”, take it home and throw it out. 3. Keep your desk clear of food It’s asking for trouble to keep food on your desk. Put the lunch and snacks you brought out of sight so that you have to go and get something from the kitchen or locker room when you’re hungry. On the other hand, if the kitchen at your place of work tends to be loaded with treats people have left for sharing, you may be better keeping your food at your desk. But at least keep it out of sight in a cupboard or drawer. 4. Stop to eat Don’t nibble food unconsciously at your desk - it’s the easiest way to overeat. Pause in whatever you are doing whenever you decide to eat and take time to really taste the food. If there’s somewhere you can go away from your desk to eat then do that, otherwise just stop working on your report or reading your emails for 5 minutes and be fully aware of the food you are eating. 5. Stay away from vending machines Vending machines tend to be full of unhealthy calorie-laden food. Having your own snacks should help you resist the temptation to treat yourself. But, in any case, keep away from the room with the machines and if you really can’t resist, stop bringing any change to work - it’s the only way! 6. When you need a break Don’t eat just because you need a break. Instead, take a quick walk or have a glass of water or herbal tea - even coffee is better than eating food you don’t need. If you find that there are times you just have to nibble on something make sure you always have plenty of healthy snacks with you. You can nibble quite a bit on carrots sticks, cucumber and celery without doing any damage to your waistline. 7. Team up If you have a colleague who is also trying to lose weight, join forces and help each other stay on track. It’s great to have someone to go for a walk with at lunchtime or to commiserate with when everyone else is wolfing down cakes someone has brought in. 8. Choose wisely You don’t have to turn down social invitations from colleagues to be able to succeed at losing weight so go ahead and join in. But you do have to select what you have to eat and drink carefully when you eat out on a regular basis. Choose the smallest portions you can and get to know the menus at the local restaurants so that you can plan what to eat ahead of time. Even fast food places now have healthier options but remember it’s often the extras which are the most fattening - condiments, dressings and sugary or milky drinks can more than double the calories in a meal. Patio Heaters: A Way To A Comfortable Outdoor Gatherings

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Robert Thatcher Sometimes, there is nothing better than just relaxing in the patio or the deck at the time of the year when the bugs are not yet very active. Good evenings can be spent outside of the door just lazing around looking at the clear evening sky, having a silent time to yourself or have a conversation going. But evenings like these can be ended shortly when the chill sends you indoors. An outdoor person who wants to extend his sitting season must have invented patio heaters. He must have intended to enjoy peaceful evenings and a year of summers. In many areas this cannot be possible but still it will prevent people who want to spend evenings out not to be sent in by the first blow of the cold. Whatever the case, patio heaters can let you enjoy your outdoor nights by keeping you comfortably warm. They can come in a variety of designs, sizes and fuel sources. Patio heaters that works by radiant heat systems can be very comfortable as they are designed to give warmth to the people and not the air. Gas, propane, wood and wood substitutes, electricity or Alco-gels can fuel patio heaters. Depending on the sizes and settings, it could warm a few feet of spaces or an entire party yard. Just like any other heating units, patio heaters perform best when it is located near a combination of walls and fences. An overhang can optimize its heating capability as overhangs can help shield the area from winds that will be blowing directly into the heated spaces. Walls and fences likewise can help bounce the heat back instead of having the warmed air escape easily. Patio heaters can come in the following varieties. The umbrella type patio heaters, so called because of its shape, are good for heating larger spaces. The umbrella type patio heaters are powered by propane, which is located at the bottom of the unit and radiates its heat through the top cylinder. This type of patio heater is sensitive to elements and it is important to tuck it away when not in use. Effective heating area is from 12 to 20 feet in diameter. Wood burning patio heaters are the cheapest to maintain and operate as they use wood and wood derivatives. These patio burners however are limited to areas that do not have ordinances against burning wood in the property. Other areas will allow wood burning provided a chimney is installed to limit the scattering of sparks that could cause damage. When opting for this kind of patio burners, children have to be taught regarding its handling. Wood burning patio heaters are available in portable and collapsible units that could easily be installed. It can also come with optional cooking grills. Patio burners that come in the gas variety and propane powered patio burners are economical to operate. Patio burners can also be powered by electricity. The limitations though is that electric powered heaters are the most expensive to maintain. Before you decide to warm up your patios and decks, consider first whether you would want a permanent patio heater or not, or if you prefer easy installation or the fixed variety. You might also want to consider if you want your patio heaters to be connected to your gas supply or the homey feel of burning wood. Patio heaters can be found in the shop where you bought patio furniture while gas and propane powered patio heaters can be found in specialty shops. The Best Way To Fish A River

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Trevor Kugler If you enjoy wading rivers, you need to try the best way I’ve ever seen to do just that. Provided your river is large enough, the best way to fish many rivers is a personal pontoon boat. The go by many different names but basically they are a personal boat and are perfect for exploring your favorite river. I do la lot of wading rivers and because of brush on the banks of the river and deep water; I can only walk most rivers for two or three miles at the most. With a personal pontoon boat, this problem is solved. Miles of river can be covered on a few hours. With the help of this “personal boat”, if you will, you’ll gain access to new water. Much of which will experience much less fishing pressure that the rest of the river. Less fishing pressure means more bites and catching more fish, it’s as simple as that. Who could argue with that? A personal pontoon boat is the best way to fish a river. When you’re fishing the river on a personal pontoon boat, it’s also nice just to float down the river and enjoy nature from time to time. Actually, the more time that you spend fishing in this manner, the more time you will spend doing just that. Just talking time along your trip to stop and enjoy nature and everything it has to offer. Once you try fishing from your own personal pontoon boat, you’ll be hooked. You’ll find that it really is the best way to fish a river. You’ll find that you catch more fish as well. As I mentioned earlier, just the fact that you can access area’s that receive much less fishing pressure than many area’s on the river is a huge advantage to you. This is especially true in the west. Most anglers won’t hike more than a mile from where they park their vehicle, so this leaves vast stretches of river that only get fished by anglers with canoes, rafts, or personal pontoon boats, and a personal pontoon boat is much easier to transport than a bulky raft or canoe. I Know How You Did That - How to Deal With Tough Spectators

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Tony Weth After completing one of your strongest magic effects and instead getting great reactions, you hear the disappointing phrase, I know how you did that. This reaction kills a magicians confidence - especially a magician whos just starting out. Like any reaction, good or bad, we must learn from these things. The first thing we have to do is make sense of what the spectator is telling us , since quite often, the things they say are different from what they mean. For the purpose of this article, this type of reaction will be called I know how you did that. When a magician receives this type of reaction, the spectator clearly thinks that he has figured out a part of the effect. Normally, a magician would feel offended and defend himself and his techniques. You never want to argue with a spectator who has made such a claim. This makes you look immature and unprofessional, and still wont change the spectators mind. Other times, your spectators will state their ideas as to how your magic is performed. Many magicians will tend to disagree with the spectator. Please avoid this in almost every situation (Ill later mention the only time that you should disagree). Although its tough accepting that your effect just has fallen flat, you must lay down your ego and accept the fact that your spectators are supposed to be entertained by your magic and they will certainly not be entertained by an argument between yourself and an audience member. This is perhaps the best situation for a magician is when a spectator indicates they know the methods, but dont address the issue further. This means that it is not a big deal to the audience. It also indicates that you are in control. The best way to handle this is to move onto another effect - quickly. Do not dwell on this situation -you dont want to hold the rest of the magic up for no apparent reason. The most difficult situation is when the spectator is a heckler or tough cookie. Magicians tend to view this situation as a confrontation or competitive. The magician will get carried away by his emotions, trying to prove that the spectator is wrong and he is right. Remember that the reason youre there is to entertain with magic, not to argue over whether or not the card was actually placed into the middle. If someone is constantly doing this throughout your performance, youll have to see how the audience is reacting. Either the audience will start to ask the same questions (siding with the heckler), or suggesting that the other person should quiet down (siding with you). Either way, you should first try to ignore that person completely. I just act as if that person does not exist, not making eye contact or talking to him. But sometimes, thats not enough. If the audience is on my side, I find that its a good idea to direct a general comment to the entire crowd. I prefer to say something like Dont worry, hes definitely not the first person in the world to be a know-it-all. If Im in a performing in a bar, Ill say something like, Wow, I guess some people really do get smarter when drunk! Sometimes, the situation is not so great. Ive been in ones where a hecklers questions spread to the rest of the audience. If this happens, I just address the individual and indicate that they have apparently have a keen insight into this art and offer to have an in-depth discussion with him after the show. Next, I apologize to the rest of the audience for the interruption and mention that that it wont happen again. Because I didnt ask him directly to shut up, I have maintained control over my routine, addressed him, and also hinted that the outbursts are definitely not welcome. As I mentioned before, there are times when you will be able to offer a single statement to refute a claim from someone. For example, if a heckler suspects that you are using a duplicate card, you may point out that the card was signed. If he suspects that the card was controlled, you can mention that a spectator shuffled it. You have to limit yourself to only one point and keep it short. If you reply to one challenge, you will be faced with more later on in your performance. What you dont want to do is to meet every challenge throughout the performance and get caught with your pants down near the end. If you dont address a single challenge from the beginning, you clearly demonstrate that there is no room for such a thing in you performance. Your goal is to maintain complete control of your performance and audience responding to their challenges and questions shows that you are giving the control to them. Working with Recruiters: 5 Critical Words for Candidates

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By William Werksman As professional recruiters working both retained and contingency search assignments, we spend a significant part of our effort preparing both the candidate and the client employer for prospective interviews. Preparing each side to meet and interact removes much of the predisposed tension that is inherent to the interview process on both sides. If each participant of the interview is prepared thoroughly with a detailed mental picture of what to expect, the normal nerves or butterflies are lessened and the result is a more fruitful interview from both sides of the table. After all, the purpose of the interview is to discover if a variety of factors match from both sides and to hopefully provide an introduction to what it would be like to work together as part of the same organization. While candidates and client employers place a tremendous amount of ‘weight’ on the first interview, from my perspective the most critical part involves the debrief or follow up after the first interview. That’s why I put forth that the 5 most critical words for candidates are: Call me after the interview. Most candidates and client employers generally perceive the first interview as make it or break it. I would assert that barring a disastrous performance by either side, very few candidates are hired after one simple interview. Client employers in today’s ultra competitive market place are seeking candidates who have good depth to them. Generally, it takes more than one interview to determine if a candidate has this depth. Thus, the debrief after the first interview is a critical step in the process for both sides. As a recruiter, we are tasked with the process of managing the expectations of both candidates and client employers during the process. Both sides must make a concerted effort to provide meaningful and significant feedback to the recruiter so he or she may determine: 1. That there is a high level of mutual interest in moving the process forward. 2. That both sides have exchanged enough information that a framework for subsequent discussion is natural. 3. That any key decision makers are now involved or scheduled to be involved in the subsequent interviews. Additionally, after this first interview and during this debrief period, it fundamental for the candidate to follow up with written correspondence to the key decision makers that will reinforce their qualifications, key points discussed during the initial meeting and most of all, interest/desire in moving forward. The inexact science of recruiting contains elements of emotion and momentum. Keeping both emotions positive and momentum moving in a positive and timely direction is integral to a strong recruiting effort. The ability of the recruiter to perform for both the candidate and the client employer will be significantly enhanced by following those 5 critical words: Call me after the interview. The Unrighteous Stewart Explained

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By David M Peterson Several years ago I heard a preacher deliver a sermon on The Unrighteous Stewart. The sermon was so bad that I was left feeling confused. This preacher had tried to explain that it is alright to steal as that was his understanding of this story. I knew Jesus never meant the lesson to be one of theft so I prayed and asked for HIS understanding of the story and this is what Jesus gave me. I want to share it here with you. Luke 16:1 8 To understand this story we must look at the scene laid out before us. Jesus had evidently just left the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees which he had entered in chapter 14:1 to teach and eat. We see him in chapter 14:25 leaving with multitudes following him which included the Pharisees who were looking for any excuse to accuse him of breaking the law. In chapter 15:1 he is accused of receiving and eating with sinners, and Jesus again begins to teach. It must be kept in mind that Jesus was a Jew and his earthly ministry was to the Jewish Nation. In Matthew 15:24, Jesus says I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And in Matthew 10:5 when he sends his disciples out, he tells them, Do not go in the way of the Gentiles. The ministry of Jesus was a microcosm of that which the Jewish Nation should have been. Jesus being one man was going to do what the Jewish Nation as the Chosen People should have done. And only by being God the Son born in the flesh could he accomplish that which the children of Abraham had failed. God had chosen the Hebrew Nation to be a witness to the world that there is but one God, a powerful God and a loving God. God manifested his power through the Jews and blessed them with the circumcision to set them apart from the Gentiles. Blessed them with the priesthood and gave to them both the written law and the oral law. God bestowed upon them blessings upon blessings. Throughout all of this the Jews began to think of themselves as the only people of God, and instead of being witnesses to the world of God, they became recluses, hoarding the gifts and blessings given to them by God. So Jesus came to be that witness so the world should not be lost. But first he had to be a witness to the very people who in the first place had been made witnesses and failed. The story of the unrighteous steward was told for the benefit of the Pharisees who were the doctors of the law and should understand that the Blessings, Gifts and Promises which they had hoarded and squandered where now going to be given freely to all, administered under a new steward (Jesus Himself) and that while there was still time they should endeavor to give what was given to them by God to those who were to receive the blessings under the new covenant which would shortly be instituted. Breaking down this parable by verses, we have: Verse 1-2 Lu 16:1 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. The rich man is God who is rich and freely gives of his wealth. The steward is the Jewish nation who were given the responsibility of administering the wealth of God. But because Gods wealth was being wasted, the Jews were to be replaced by a new steward (Jesus Christ). Verse 3-7 Lu 16:3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.5 So he called every one of his lords debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?6 And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore. Here they are being told that if they would understand this, they should plan for the future. They will no longer be in a position to take what isnt theirs because Gods blessings would come by way of another steward. If they are not to be left out in the cold they must take that which they stole and give to them who are in debt. In that way they will be remembered when those who are in debt have the blessings and the former stewards are in debt. Verse 8 Lu 16:8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. The Lord commends the former steward not for his unrighteousness, but because he made provisions for his future. Though he will no longer be in a position to administer the blessings from God, he can still be a partaker of those blessings. Except for water, protein is the most plentiful substance in your body. It is the major building material for the body. The Panty Remover

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By February Fontaine After a hard day at work nothing removes my panties faster than a long hot bathtub full of bubbles. That’s right, a good old fashion bubble bath. On my way home that’s all I can think about. I get goose bumps over every inch of my body. By the time I get to the elevator in my building I am already starting to undress myself. By the time I get to my front door I’m half naked. As soon as I get inside I immediately strip down and start the hot water. Then, as the bathroom steams up and the bathtub fills up I pour my special aromatic bubble bath into the hot water. After the tub fills up I gently ease my naked body into the scorching hot bubbles. And the water has to be very hot. So hot that it prickles my pretty pink skin. I love to sit back and relax and let the bubbles and oils ooze over my body. It’s a great way to get rid of the stress of the day. Sometimes I’ll even take a short nap. After the bubble bath it’s time to choose my lingerie for the evening. If I am going out that night with a man that I am intimate with the party begins. Maybe I’ll wear a red laced garter belt with matching g-string and bustier. Or maybe a criss-cross top sheer thigh high. After the lingerie is chosen then it’s time for my shoes. My favorite shoes are my sexy red mules or my cage style 5 inch heel sandals. Both make me feel tremendously sexy. As for a dress - the sexier the better. One of my favorite dresses is my red babydoll dress. It matches my favorite shoes. It has a satin band at the waist with spaghetti straps. It’s long enough so that I don’t look like a tramp but short enough to make the men look. And it’s great for showing off cleavage. If I decide to stay in by myself for the evening I like to lounge around in a satin and lace chemise. For some reason my favorite color for a chemise is teal. If you have never tried a long hot bubble bath after a stressful day at work you don’t know what you are missing. Nothing gets me naked faster. (c) All rights reserved.
