Composting and Composters: A Basic Introduction

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Mark Falco Why Compost? Recent studies show that an average family throws away approximately 200 pounds of organic kitchen waste every year. Combine this with all the leaves, grass clippings and other organic garden waste accumulated over time and that’s a lot of household waste being added to the already mountainous waste disposal problem. Some local authorities are refusing to take away green waste from gardening and others charge for the service in an effort to curb mounting costs and then when you add in the environmental costs of adding new landfill sites, road transport emissions from ferrying all this waste around and potentially incineration and the fumes that releases the environmental advantages of composting are clear. In slightly more selfish terms, if you are a gardener then you will know the relatively high cost of fertiliser. Well, OK an average gardener’s yearly fertiliser expenditure is not going to break the bank but when you can get fertiliser for free out of the stuff you throw away then it starts looking extremely expensive. Composting simply makes good environmental and financial sense and it’s so easy to do there’s nothing stopping you. What Do I Need To Begin? A compost bin, box, enclosure or handy place to put an open compost heap. Cheap plastic composters and compost bins can be bought from all good garden centers and are quite inexpensive depending on your requirements. A plastic compost bin is generally the cheapest whilst wood composters are generally more attractive additions to your garden but a little more costly. An open heap (just create a pile somewhere) is also an option but it is advisable to have some sort of cover like a tarpaulin available for colder periods of weather. Another slightly different alternative to composting in the traditional sense is vermicomposting or wormeries. These use a special kind of worms to break down kitchen scraps producing a fine compost-like material fromtheir casts and a nutrient filled liquid plant food which is ideal for feeding indoor pot plants. If do a lot of greenhouse gardening or have a lot of houseplants then a wormery may be the best choice for the disposal of household waste. If you do not want to actually spend money on a composter then building your own isn’t exactly difficult if you do not mind picking up a hammer and nails. Nail together a few wooden pallets for example and you’ve got an enclosure suitable for composting. For plans and ideas on how to assemble your own composter at little cost, simply head to your favourite search engine and type in phrases like “build your own composter” or “compost bin plans” for an endless supply of simple ideas typically costing under $30. Where To Put Your Compost Whether you purchase a composting bin or make your own composter you need to make sure you have a flat, well drained place in your garden not too far away that you begrudge taking your kitchen scraps out to it. Compost bins should not be placed on concrete, patio areas etc. as you want to allow the insects, worms and microorganisms which help degradation of your waste materials the freedom to migrate into and out of your compost without hinderance. In addition, choose a site which suits your climate. Warmth and moisture helps the composting process so place your composter in a place which receives a fair amount of sunlight and shelter from the wind if you live in a cooler climate and if in a hotter climate, ensure you give it shade to prevent it drying out. What Materials Can You Compost? Pretty much all your organic household and garden waste is an elligible candidate for composting although there are a few exceptions. Things to particularly avoid are meat, fish, bones, fats and oils, dairy products like milk and cheese, dog and cat droppings as these can attract animals, create foul smells as they degrade and carry nasty diseases. Also, whilst weeds and plants can be added, it is advised to dry out persisent weeds and remove seed heads before adding these. Ashes are also best avoided, as are glossy magazines although shredded paper and cardboard are fine to add. Feel free to add waste fruit and vegetables, crushed egg shells, coffee grounds (worms love them!) and tea bags, hair, leaves, grass clippings and other organic waste. As a general rule, if in doubt, leave it out but most organic waste will rot down just fine and if you shred it or cut it up smaller, it will compost faster. How Long Before It Becomes Compost? This depends on the balance of materials in your compost heap, the weather and the amount of time you can devote to the project. If you want to take an active managed approach to your composting then you can have afully composted pile in 3 months but if your only desire is to dispose of kitchen and garden waste in a more ‘green’ manner then it can take 6 months to a year or longer. Managed composting can produce a ‘hot rot’ with very fast results but it does require additional effort on your behalf to keep it going. A managed, hot compost heap with an excellent balance of materials can reach temperatures of 70 degree celsius but requires regular turning and nurturing with careful layering and balance of browns and greens in the mix, shredding materials and maintaining a good moisture level. An unmanaged cool heap is however much easier to maintain and rots down at up to 30 degrees celsius with little input from you. Just throwing your waste on the heap will give you a cooler heap which will rot down more slowly but is fine for green waste disposal purposes. There are ways to increase the rate of the composting process in both cases by, for example, adding composting worms, or by using an activator which help speed up the process. The addition of a handful or soil now and then or horse manure will also add micro-organisms to speed up the composting process free of charge. For The Best Compost… …use a wide variety of different materials. The more varied the materials you add to the compost pile, the nutrient rich your final compost will be. Compost made from kitchen and garden waste is the best food for your plants and at the same time you are helping the environment and saving yourself and your local government money into the bargain. Caryopteris ‘First Choice’ and ‘Sunshine Blue’

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Alan Summers Add Late Summer Color to Your Garden Caryopteris, commonly known as ‘Blue Spirea,’ is a family of small shrubs that add huge ornamental value to the garden. They bloom from late summer to early autumn - a time when most gardens are in need of color. Caryopteris is Greek in origin and means “winged nut” - referring to the small winged fruit that appears after the flowers die off. The common name ‘Blue Spirea’ comes from its resemblance to true Spirea. Caryopteris is also commonly called ‘Blue Mist’ shrub and ‘Blue Beard.’ This week we are featuring two of the densest and most beautiful Caryopteris - ‘First Choice,’ a long blooming introduction from England, and golden leaved ‘Sunshine Blue’ also developed in England. Caryopteris ‘First Choice’ ‘First Choice’ is a compact, mounded shrub with vertical spires that are densely covered in beautiful inky-blue buds that open to reveal an even more beautiful violet-blue flower. These blue flowers are very fragrant and are paired with beautiful silvery-gray deciduous foliage. ‘First Choice’ starts blooming earlier and blooms longer than other Caryopteris. The strong fragrance and bright color attracts butterflies as well as many other beneficial insects. Caryopteris ‘Sunshine Blue’ ‘Sunshine Blue’ is a small, dense shrub similar to ‘First Choice,’ but with golden foliage. Like ‘First Choice,’ the blossoms make excellent cut flowers. ‘Sunshine Blue’ has a strong growing habit and blooms well into the fall with clusters of deep blue, fragrant flowers. The combination of blue flowers with gold foliage gives a contrast unlike anything else in your garden. Planting and Care ‘First Choice’ and ‘Sunshine Blue’ are known for their low maintenance and disease resistance. Planting them in areas with well-drained or even dry soil and full sun will provide you with the most spectacular bloom. Caryopteris is extremely drought tolerant. They will perform well in very light shade, but will not tolerate wet soil especially in winter. Lightly prune after the initial bloom to encourage re-bloom. Both ‘First Choice’ and ‘Sunshine Blue’ are small shrubs that grow to 36″ tall and wide. They are ideal in a flower bed, as a hedge, as a specimen planting or incorporated into a foundation planting. Masses of three to five plants are particularly attractive. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. Mulch to a depth of three inches the first winter. Fertilizer with Flower-Tone in early spring. Cut back by half in early spring. Hardy in Zones 6-9 To view Caryopteris ‘First Choice’ and ‘Sunshine Blue’ visit the Carroll Gardens website. Understanding Restaurants Health Inspections

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Brian Ward With todays busy life styles, eating out in restaurants is becoming more and more common. We tend to take the easy road for our fast paced life. There are some things you need to know before you take a seat at your favorite restaurant. The first thing you should do is look for the health inspection sheet; this sheet tells you what grade the restaurant made on their health inspection. This inspection is performed by our government to ensure healthy and sanitized procedures are taking place in the establishment youre visiting. This inspection sheet should be located near the front of the restaurant on a wall, it should be framed. This sheet is pink in color. The grade will be on the upper right hand side of the paper. The higher the grade, the better this establishment has performed in following the guidelines for better health conditions. If the grade is low, this means that not all heath regulations are being followed. This inspection sheet tells you all areas and procedures that should be followed by the restaurant. It follows a point system. It is pretty easy to tell what your favorite dinning place is doing to ensure their customers are safe. Most restaurants average in the upper 80s, which means they need to improve their health practices. In our local town, they televise these reports. This gives restaurant establishments an extra incentive to be clean which can really improve the safety of dining experience. The most important thing on this pink health inspection sheet is that you understand the grade. Look for this simple little word (ADJUSTED). This means the first time the inspector came to grade the restaurant, it failed to pass the guidelines. Restaurants who fail to meet health guidelines are given ten days to comply or they will have to close their doors. I personally think that they should close the doors immediately if the restaurant is not practicing safe and healthy procedures. Then, when the restaurant complies and reopens their doors, it will be up to you to decide if you want to eat there. Brian Ward author of health, and informational articles for all to understand. Data Protection: Abuse of Process - Damage

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Rosanna Cooper The case of Austen v University of Wolverhampton (2005), confirms that in order for a claim under the Data Protection Act 1998 (”the Act”) to succeed, there must be evidence of damage and court proceedings must be a proportionate action. The claimant spent a year as an undergraduate at the defendant university. He issued proceedings against the defendant for defamation, breach of confidence, infringement of his right to privacy, intentional infliction of physical or emotional harm and breach of statutory duty under the Act. The claim in respect of intentionally inflicting harm arose out of a meeting between the defendant’s data protection officer and an officer of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) who was conducting an investigation into the claimant. The claimant learnt of words allegedly said at the meeting by the defendant’s officer and contended that those words had exacerbated a pre-existing psychiatric condition. In the data protection claim, the claimant alleged that: He had been provided with misinformation by the defendant in so far as it claimed to have destroyed exam scripts written by the claimant; A document supplied to him was unintelligible; The defendant had not disclosed a document which was produced at meeting with the officer from the DWP; and Documents which had been disclosed had been disclosed late. The defendant applied to the Court to strike out the claim. The Court decided that: The claims for defamation, breach of confidence and infringement of the claimant’s right to privacy would fail; The claim under the Act would be struck out in part; and In respect of the claim for intentionally inflicting harm, it could not be decided that the claimant had no real prospects of success. The defendant appealed in respect of the Court’s decision in so far as it allowed parts of the claim to proceed. The Court held that: The claim for intentionally inflicting harm was struck out because the claimant had no realistic prospect of succeeding on this claim as the defendant could not have intended that the comments made at the meeting would be passed on to the claimant nor had the claimant produced any material to support his assertion that he had suffered injury; and The claim under the Act was struck out because there was nothing of any substance in the claimant’s allegation as the claimant had no reasonable prospect of establishing he had suffered damage and to allow the claim to proceed would be disproportionate and amount to an abuse of process. Dating Advice: Attract Women With Funny T-Shirts

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Spencer Steele Throughout history men have tried every technique available to pick up women. Some guys use a straight forward approach and others use cheesy pick-up lines. Lately a new trend has been emerging that seems to work better for men than any traditional pick-up techniques. Men across the country have been wearing t-shirts with funny sayings on them to get women to flock to them. It sounds ridiculously simple but it works. The reason that the shirts are so effective is because often a woman may have an interest in a man but have no way to let him know. Many women are afraid to just walk right up to a guy and say, “Hey, I like you! By wearing a funny shirt you give them a reason to come talk to you. All they have to say is I like your shirt and let out a little chuckle and the conversation is started. These work great at bars, the gym and at coffee shops. I’ve met tons of women using funny t-shirts and the best part is that they’ve come up to me - I didn’t have to do anything. Once the girl approaches you it’s up to you to have your game tight but the shirts make a perfect ice-breaker. So, while its important to keep your career on track, go to the gym and stay well groomed, you may be overlooking the simplest thing you can do to attract women Throw on a t-shirt that has a witty slogan on it. You may be surprised at how well it works. http://www.WittyShirts.com has a bunch of hilarious t-shirts that are perfect. Open an Online Savings Account (A Newbie’s Guide)

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Stanley McMahon The basic steps for opening an online savings account are the same for all online banks. Various online banks are present and these offer different services and benefits but to varying degrees. Before opening a virtual bank account, it is important to know if the bank is insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC), which insures accounts up to a value of $ 100,000. The APY offered by online banks is much higher than that offered by bricks and mortar banks; this is because maintaining a virtual account results in fewer overheads for banks. All the same, one should compare APYs offered by different banks before selecting a bank to open an account with. Ideally, the banks should credit the interest, which is compounded daily, on a monthly basis. Opening an account with an online bank is a quick process that can be carried out telephonically or online. Filling the application form online rarely takes more than fifteen minutes; whether filling for an individual account or a joint account. Information required includes personal details, residential address, and details of a checking account that is to be linked to the online account. If during the course of filling the application one is unable to furnish any detail, it is possible to save the application and return to it later. The linked account is verified by the bank by verifying two test deposits made into that account by the account holder. Instant verification is also possible; it is achieved by submitting the login ID and password of the checking account that needs to be verified. The account is activated when the prospective account holder receives material via postal mail. The material includes a temporary login ID and password, the account number and account password, ATM card, and ATM password. It can take anywhere between four to eight days for the materials to arrive by post separately. Sending the material via mail is time consuming but it helps the banks to corroborate the address details mentioned in the application by the prospective account holder. Stanley McMahon recommends you visit OSAWatch for a more in-depth tutorial on how to open an online savings account. Tanning Bed Facts

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By M.D. Stacener A tanning bed produces UV rays and thus just like the sun there can be some health issues. You can tan safely by following the tanning bed tips provided by many. Here are some tanning bed facts. Skin type No matter what type of tanning bed you are using, if you dont know your skin type you could land up in trouble. There are five basic skin types. The lightest being albino the darkest being naturally dark pigmented skin such as Asian or African. And then there is the rest of us somewhere in between. The type of skin you have will determine how long and how often you can tan. Some skin types burn much quicker, while others seldom burn at all. The salon attendant will help you determine your skin type. If you are tanning at home then refer to the manual that came with your tanning bed. Tanning Lotions Always use a tanning lotion that id designed for indoor tanning. Stay away from the oils. They are messy and they get all over the acrylic which then blocks the rays from reaching you. Use a tanning lotion appropriate for your skin. So if you burn easily the choose a lotion with a higher SPF. Never use inside lotions outside or outside lotions inside. Each is designed to protect you from specific rays associated with that type of tanning. Do Not Let Yourself Burn Avoid a sun burn at all costs. In the tanning world this is the golden rule. Some people will burn much easier than others and you need to take steps to avoid burning. If you are really fair and you never tan without first getting a burn, then dont tan. Its that simple. Burns are dangerous to your health and the cause of skin cancer. No tan is worth risking skin cancer. Tan smart! Choose Your Bed Carefully You should always start with a lower watt tanning bulb bed. The beginner beds arent as powerful as the mega beds and it will give you pigment time to develop. Once youve got your base tan you can move to a bed that has stronger tanning bulbs. If you stop tanning and you loose your tan then you have to start all over again from the beginning with a low watt bed. The strong tanning bulb beds are very powerful and you will damage your skin if your skin is not ready for them. Home Tanning Beds You might want to consider purchasing your own bed. Although the commercial beds are great you have to work your schedule around their schedule and it seems youre always rushed. With a bed at home you can relax and enjoy your tan and you can tan in the privacy of your own home. Its a great end to a busy day. Home tanning beds can be purchased for a reasonable price, especially if you calculate how much it cost to go to a commercial bed. Remember there is not just the cost of session but the gas to get there, the wear and tear on your car, and the cost of your time. Its something to consider. Of course there are advantages to commercial tanning beds to. They always have the latest and greatest beds. They absorb the cost of replacing bulbs that have become weak, and they do all the maintenance and repair. All you have to do is show up. However you decide to get your indoor tan, just be smart and tan in moderation. You can have that beautiful golden tan if you play your tanning bulbs right! Long Hair and Updo Hairstyles

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Stuart Simpson You have long hair and you are ready for an updo or long hair service and you go to a full service salon and what they dont offer long hair service. Guess its not so full service after all. So you go to another beautician and they dont know what to do either. Why is that? Some of the reasons hairstylists dont offer long hair or updo service is because: None of their clients have long hair Never learned how Takes too long Learned, tried it, but got out of practice and forgot Too confusing To the hairstylist, watching is easy. But when you are actually doing the work, it becomes confusing. Its hard for a hairstylist to get and keep clients. If you are able to offer total hair services, including long hair, then youll be keeping new clients instead of sending them away. One way to help you get over some of the points listed above is to practice on a wig or mannequin. When you are in-between appointments, this will offer you practice to gain confidence and allows you to display your work to your customers. If you are good at long hair, then you need to be the hairstylist that your competitors send their customers to. Advertise that you do long hair. There are plenty that dont do long hair and this approach may get you the client list you need. Let the bridal shops know you are available, along with the formal dress shops. Girls going to prom always want fancy hairstyles. Offer your services free to the bridal show as a promotion for your business. This helps you gain more updo customers and helps the bridal shop. Win-win. You can also create a photo album of the mannequins you have been practicing on, or on customers. This will give prospective customers your ability and creativity level. Another idea is to work with a clothing store on their special event or sale days and offer your services to attract customers. You can make these books up inexpensively with a digital camera and color copies. Have them bound with some of your business cards and ask if you can display them at the bridal shops. Complimentary cards are very good, too. You can offer a discount on the back of the card. When a client gets their hair done, then give them some cards to hand out when they are asked where they got such a cute hairstyle. This works especially well at high schools before proms and dances. As always, if they dont need long hair services, they will probably pass the card onto a friend. How much should you charge or expect to pay for long hair or updo services? Well, its different all over the country, but in general, the price should be at least $5 over the normal hairstyle whether its a shampoo and blowdry. Be prudent in your pricing as if you get a client that will only require 15 minutes for a braid or a quick updo, then you may not want to charge more. Weight Loss Tip: Should You Blame Your “Fat Genes” For Your Current Body?

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Melroy Drego Okay, I heard you. Your parents are Big, you siblings are the same, and you dont think that there is a way out for you, from your currently overweight state. Let me hold out a flag of hope for you, dear Big Person, because you are going to get the single best weight-loss tip of your life. Look: There definitely are differences in body-types: the Meso-, Endo-, and Ectomorphic types and all of them respond differently to exercise and nutrition. Very quickly: the Ectomorph has it easy she seems to be able to eat anything and everything and never put on weight. At the other end of the scale is the Mesomorph, who puts on weight (and muscle) easily, and has to constantly watch out for the amount of calories she consumes. Granted, our body types do dictate, generally, what we are going to look like. On the other hand, think of this: there are hardly any overweight people on the continent of Africa. And the same genes that many of the blacks in the Americas have, can be found there after all Africa is where the American blacks have come from! So we should have found the same kind of distribution of Big people in Africa. The differentiating factor then comes down to the availability of calories in the two places: i.e., who has easy access to calorie-filled meals? The answer then, to the reason we are overweight, is simple. We are very often overweight because of our (family) habits. Somewhere in your family history, your family members may have decided to buy and eat more, much more than you need for your body. And these habits have eventually replaced your familys original healthy food habits, with the result that today you have habits that have dictated the shape of an entire generation in your family. Yes, someone is to blame. Someone in your family tree has started habits that have shaped your family. The good news is that your body shape is not indelible. The results that you see in your familys weight (and yourself) can be changed, turned around, indeed, erased forever. And you start changing your body shape and weight right now with this single simple weight loss tip: Stop Blaming “someone out there”. Stop looking for something to point at, someone to lay the blame on for your being overweight. Stop, because when you blame, you lose your own incredible personal power: your power to choose what you want for yourself and to take action to achieve it. If you are reading this article and just looking for ammunition to help you in blaming your family, you are wasting your time. However, if you have been searching for a solution to your being overweight, you have come to the right place. The place where you can start getting new results for yourself by changing one thing: your Mind. Remember this one sentence: Once you have stopped blaming and have started making conscious, well-thought-out choices, you are ready to take control of your life. Now you are ready to lose weight permanently and change your shape. Having had an environment where most of the family is overweight, you most likely have internal programming that will keep you overweight, unless you fix it. That is something that many overweight people have in common. For some reason or the other, their minds had learnt that being overweight is “good and desirable”, or the actions that led to them being overweight (like eating the amounts or types of food that make one overweight) are “good and desirable”. My Weight-Loss Tip is this: You must fix your mind. You need to become aware of your programming. You need to use mind-tools (and use them systematically) to help you turn your life around. Does this sound like Work? Of course, its work! But if you want to lose weight, to change your body (and your entire Life), you can. Remember this: Awareness is the key to changing your Life. Become Aware of how you make your decisions about food and exercise. It is very likely that your decision-mechanism has been pre-programmed towards actions that make you fat. Start questioning your normal choices in food, exercise, and life-style. Question everything you do out of habit. Start examining your life. Ask yourself Why do I do this? Ask yourself What if I were to ..? Think about different ways of eating, of spending your leisure time, of entertaining yourself and your children. And find a System that will help you do this, consistently, until new habits, new ways of behaving and living are formed within you. And then, you will be really free of the burden of being overweight. In this article I have helped you by raising your awareness about a possible culprit in your life: Your personal Awareness level, your programmed mind and whether your minute-to-minute power to choose has been hijacked.
